YWCA Darien/Norwalk’s New Directions Announces Computer Training Schedule

DARIEN, CT – August 31, 2010 – The YWCA Darien/Norwalk’s New Directions program has announced its computer training schedule for 2010-2011. The 2-hour class will be offered on Wednesdays at 10am and again at 6pm. This 15-week program will begin September 29th and run through February 2nd 2011 and will be offered again from February 9th to June 8th. The training will focus on Microsoft applications beginning with basic Word and including Publisher, PowerPoint, and Excel.

The computer classes will be held in the Technology Training Center located at the YWCA Darien/Norwalk’s facility in Darien. The Technology Training Center was made possible by a generous grant in Fall 2009 from the Darien Technology & Community Foundation and features ten state of the art computer stations. Microsoft applications are taught by Susan Cameron, a computer training professional with over 30 years of experience with computers. A basic Microsoft Word class will be taught on an ongoing basis by New Directions Coordinator Kate Foster who also provides individualized computer assistance.

Most students in the computer classes are participants in YWCA New Directions, a program that provides women with support and tools needed to find employment with the ultimate goal of economic self-sufficiency. In addition to computer training, women are provided with one-on-one support and guidance in the job search process which can include assistance with resumes, cover letters, interviewing techniques, networking, job search websites and more. Participants come from all over Fairfield County including Greenwich, Wilton, Ridgefield, Fairfield, Norwalk, Darien and Stamford.

“Women who attend these classes improve their skills and gain increased confidence as they prepare to enter the workforce. Looking for work is especially challenging in these economic times and this program helps to provide a solid starting point,” said Kate Foster. As the coordinator of the New Directions program, Foster helps participants build on their existing strengths and develop skills to move forward in their lives. She is a licensed clinical social worker who received her MSW from the Columbia University School of Social Work and also has experience as a human resources professional.
