YWCA Darien/Norwalk’s New Directions Announces Computer Training Schedule

DARIEN, CT – January 17, 2011 – The YWCA Darien/Norwalk has announced its computer training schedule for winter/spring of 2011 for women who qualify for the YWCA’s New Directions program. A 15-week program will begin February 9, 2011 and run through June 8, 2011 and will focus on Microsoft applications beginning with basic Word and including Publisher, PowerPoint, and Excel. Participants can enroll in the 2-hour class offered on Wednesdays at 10am or Wednesdays at 6pm.

The computer classes will be held in the Technology Training Center located at the YWCA Darien/Norwalk’s facility in Darien. The Technology Training Center was made possible by a generous grant in Fall 2009 from the Darien Technology & Community Foundation and features ten state of the art computer stations. Microsoft applications are taught by Susan Cameron, a computer training professional with over 30 years of computer experience. A 6-week basic Microsoft Word class will be taught on an ongoing basis by New Directions Coordinator Kate Foster who also provides individualized computer assistance.

There are 10 students per class and all students in the computer classes are participants in YWCA New Directions, a program that provides women with support and tools needed to find employment with the ultimate goal of economic self-sufficiency. In addition to computer training, women are provided with one-on-one support and guidance in the job search process which can include assistance with resumes, cover letters, interviewing techniques, networking, job search websites and more. Participants come from all over Fairfield County including Greenwich, Wilton, Ridgefield, Fairfield, Norwalk, Darien and Stamford.

The February to June 2011 session of the computer training program is identical to the training offered from September 26, 2010 to February 2, 2011. “We reached maximum enrollment for the September 26th to February 2nd session and are anticipating the same for this winter/spring session. Women who attend these classes improve their skills and gain increased confidence as they prepare to enter the workforce,” said Kate Foster. As the coordinator of the New Directions program, Foster helps participants build on their existing strengths and develop skills to move forward in their job searches and in their lives. She is a licensed clinical social worker who received her MSW from the Columbia University School of Social Work and also has experience as a human resources professional.
