YWCA Darien/Norwalk Expands Job Search Support Program |
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE YWCA Darien/Norwalk Expands Job Search Support Program
DARIEN, CT – October 13, 2011 – The YWCA Darien/Norwalk’s job search support program exclusively for women is now open to all residents of Darien and other towns in lower Fairfield County. Services such as resume and cover letter writing, individual counseling on all aspects of job search, and computer classes are available for a fee. These services also are available on a scholarship basis from the YWCA Darien/Norwalk for women demonstrating a need. “We’re excited to make this program available to the entire community and think it will be appreciated given the economic downturn driving women to seek employment and to update their computer skills and resume,” said the YW’s Executive Director Ellen Kirby. Certified Social Worker and Career Coach Kate Foster continues to lead the program as she has for the past two years. Ms. Foster offers practical one-on-one job search assistance with resume writing, interviewing skills, job search website navigation and everything needed to prepare for landing that perfect job. Kate’s background includes over 12 years experience as a corporate human resource professional and over 25 years experience in clinical social work, having received her MSW from the Columbia University School of Social Work. Whether it’s getting a part-time job, returning to your career or embarking on a new opportunity, Kate can help. “Women sometimes feel the need to apologize that the only recent work experience they have for a resume is volunteer or part time. I help women realize this is real experience that they can leverage in a resume and job interview.” Ms. Foster and Susan Cameron, a computer training professional with over 30 years of experience with computers, will also be teaching the computer classes at the YWCA Darien/Norwalk’s Technology Training Center. November classes will be Beginning Microsoft Excel and Beginning Microsoft Word and December classes will be Intermediate Excel and Word. Each class will include practical applications to the workplace, meeting for 2 hours each week for 3 consecutive weeks. The 2-hour Beginning Excel class will begin on November 2nd and will be offered on Wednesdays at 10am and again at 6pm. The 2-hour Beginning Word class will begin on November 3rd and will be offered on Thursdays at 10am and again at 6pm. Pre-registration is required by calling the YW office at 203-655-2535. Training in 2012 will include other Microsoft applications. The YWCA job search support program was originally developed in the 1980s to help women who need to become financially self-sufficient gain the job skills they need to enter the workforce. In the past, participants have been residents of Greenwich, Wilton, Ridgefield, Fairfield, Norwalk, Darien and Stamford.
