“MISS REPRESENTATION (PG 13)”
Youth, Beauty and Sex:
What message is the media sending our kids?

Screening and Panel Presentation

DARIEN, CT – October 20, 2011 -Be sexy. Look young. And look beautiful. Are these today’s requirements for women and girls who want to succeed? Are leadership capabilities and intellect being overshadowed by media images of women that few can actually attain or maintain? Coming soon to Darien, the new documentary, Miss Representation, examines these questions thru the messages our children are getting from TV, magazines, movies, advertisements and the Internet. Thru compelling stories from teenagers and conversations with well known women and men including Dr. Condoleezza Rice, Rachel Maddow, Katie Couric, Jane Fonda, Gloria Steinem, Cory Booker and Rosario Dawson, the film is insightful, provocative, enlightening and soul searching. The message from Miss Representation is clear: Media is telling yet another generation that a woman’s primary value lies in her youth, beauty and sexuality.

The media can be an instrument of change: it can maintain the status quo and reflect the views of the society or it can, hopefully, awaken people and change minds. I think it depends on who’s piloting the plane.” -

Katie Couric, Journalist

For an entertaining and multi-faceted look at this issue, along with ideas and solutions to counteract these media messages, YWCA Parent Awareness and Darien Library are proud to present two screenings of the film, Miss Representation, on November 2nd and November 9th both beginning at 7pm. The first screening on November 2nd will be followed by a special panel discussion moderated by broadcast journalist Jeanne Yurman and featuring CBS News Producer Wendy Krantz, Womens’ Studies Educator Patricia Spoor, and Edward Moran and Amanda Romaniello from the Family Centers.

The film runs 1 hour and 30 minutes and is considered to have a “PG-13” rating due to some harsh language and images needed to tell the story. Students are invited to come with an adult. Darien is the first community in Connecticut to publicly screen this film, which is owned by OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network. It will startle you, it will make you angry, it will make you laugh and most of all it will make you think. This special film, Miss Representation, is not to be missed.

The program is free of charge. Parent Awareness is a YWCA program that promotes the healthy, positive development of Darien youth and families. Parent Awareness and Darien Library are members of Thriving Youth: Connected Community; TYCC is a catalyst for developmental asset building through meaningful relationship experiences, skills and opportunities that benefit all our children.
